April 15, 2014 Today's Headlines- Morning Security Brief: Ukraine Orders Military Action, Heartbleed Woes Increase, And More www.securitymanagement.com

Ukraine orders a military operation to confront pro-Russian militants, the Heartbleed flaw continues to plague the Internet, Attorney General Eric Holder asks for additional funds to train for active shooter scenarios, and Boston marks the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing.

► Efforts to fix the Heartbleed flaw could cause major disruptions to the Internet over the next few weeks as companies attempt to repair the encryption systems of thousands of Web sites at the same time, The Washington Post reports. Original estimates of the flaw considered it a simple matter of changing passwords for protection, but new revelations suggest that hackers can use the flaw to create fake Web sites that act like legitimate ones to trick consumers into handing over their personal information. “The sheer scale of the work required to fix the bug—which makes it possible to steal the ‘security certificates’ that verify that a Web site is authentic—could overwhelm the systems designed to keep the Internet trustworthy,” according to the Post. Some estimates have said that Heartbleed has affected as much as two-thirds of the Internet, but there have been no reports of anyone actually exploiting the flaw.
