04/22/2014 - ► Security procedures are under review at San Jose International Airport after a 15-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel of a Boeing 767

Security procedures are under review at San Jose International Airport after a 15-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a Boeing 767 bound for Hawaii. According to NPR, a review of security footage shows the teen approaching the plane in the dark the night before the flight; the cameras are not viewed live. Experts surmise that the teenager snuck onto the tarmac by scaling one of the fences that surround the airport. Most of the fences are topped with barbed wire, but not all. The boy is lucky to have survived the 5-hour flight, according to the article. The temperature at the cruising altitude of 38,000 feet is minus 85 degrees. The temperature, combined with the lack of oxygen, is usually deadly. However, “some people survive because their breathing, heart rate, and brain activity slow down.”
