► The U.K. government has launched an investigation into 25 secondary schools in Birmingham over allegations that the administrators of those schools have appointed extremist Muslim instructors and are attempting to radicalize students. Jack Straw, former home secretary, announced support for the investigation. According to the Daily Mail, Straw said that “there is a real distinction between people who are devout and a very small minority who are extremist and verging into militant extremism and to justifying violence.” However, Chris Sims, chief constable of the West Midlands Police, has denounced the investigation into the schools, which contain high numbers of Muslim students, as “desperately unfortunate.” An article in The Guardian notes that an anonymous letter set off the investigation. According to the article, “despite reasonable evidence suggesting the plot letter is a hoax, it has sparked debate in the city, with far right groups looking to capitalize while some prominent Muslims claim the allegations are baseless and rooted in Islamophobia.”
