Georgia's emergency app re-release adds new functionality, including geo-targeted severe weather and emergency alerts.
After severe weather hit the state of Georgia earlier this year, Gov. Nathan Deal called for an improved emergency app, and on June 16, that app was released.
The upgraded Ready Georgia app maintains old features and adds several new features, including geo-targeted severe weather and emergency alerts that notify users based on their locations before an event, such as severe weather, occurs. Users can access live traffic maps and incident reports directly from the Georgia Department of Transportation, as well as obtain a map of local American Red Cross and approved Good Samaritan shelters, along with directions to those shelters from their location.
Old features on the app, still included, allow users to view checklists of emergency supplies, create customized disaster plans, check flood risk levels, check historical tornado data for their region, and find local emergency management agency contact information.
“The Ready Georgia app already served as a good resource for Georgians, but now that its capabilities have been expanded it will keep us better informed when emergency situations arise,” Deal stated in a press release. “I appreciate the cooperative efforts of all involved in this process, and I encourage everyone to download this app in advance of future weather-related emergencies.”
The app was developed by Georgia Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service, the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Georgia Institute of Technology and The Weather Channel.
