A recent cluster of earthquakes centered near Challis, Idaho, have locals securing their knick-knacks and scientists scratching their heads. Why here, and why now, are the main questions facing Idaho geologists. Portable seismic monitors installed this week are poised to help find the answers.
Since March 31, there have been at least 33 earthquakes near Challis higher than a 2.5 on the Richter scale and 100 smaller ones. The largest, on Sunday, was 4.9.
“That’s relatively unusual. That’s one of the key reasons it’s being looked at,” said Bill Phillips, research geologist at the Idaho Geological Survey at the University of Idaho in Moscow.
The last time there was an earthquake that large in Idaho was 2001, near Grays Lake in eastern Idaho. That quake was 5.3.
